Startup #85 – My Perfect Pet

lolcatrenderer2.jpglolcatrenderer2.jpgRemember this idea?  Check this out:  I love it!

In honor of my recent nuptuals, I’m going to post an idea that I stole from my beautiful and talented new bride.  We were discussing the soon-to-be newest addition to our family (either a dog or cat) and she came up with a great idea for a new site that would ask you a series of questions and then present some options for a pet that would fit the given criteria.  For example, we are looking for a pet that is relatively small, has short hair, could be left overnight without supervision, has a good temperment, etc…   The site would use the filters to display a list of specific pets that might be a good fit (i.e. Cocker Spaniel).

There are a few things you could do to spice it up a bit.  For one, the site would be extremely visual.  Instead of filling out a boring text questionaire, the site would start with a ton of small photos of pets on the bottom 2/3 of the screen, and the top 1/3 would have a series of sliders that you could adjust to choose the various filters.  As you moved the sliders, the list would be narrowed down and the images would scale up to fit the screen.  Also, once you reached a point where you have a pet that meets your criteria, you could click on the pet and the site could pull a list of animals from the local shelter that need to be saved.

  1. Are you thinking that the pets displayed would be ones for sale on the site? or would they just be breeds that would be good for it?

  2. Hey brother, welcome back married man. Things still rosy with the marriage? She hasn’t found out about that “thing” yet, has she? (J/K of course! No, really kidding, honest)

The only tough thing here is the tie in to the local shelters “inventory” if you will. What’s the likelihood that this business will get any substantial number of local shelters to update and maintain the pets they have available? Probably pretty small, though if that could be figured out I am thinking this is a great idea!

    Welcome back!

  3. Harry – I asked the “head of the household” and she said that the idea would primarily be focused on just displaying the breeds. As JK mentioned, it would be difficult to get feeds from shelters, so that would probably be added only in major markets where there is a feed that is easily consumable.

JK – Thanks, man! Good to hear from you, totally agree on the inventory issue.

  4. I normally loathe the idea of advertising as a revenue system, but an idea this specific would probably call for it. Petco, Petsmart, Purina, whatever would probably be chomping at the bit (pun intended) to get new pet owners introduced to their brand(s).

Cost-per-action coupons for training sessions, discounts on dog-food, localized classifieds for petsitters, dog walkers, etc.

Question – who decides what characteristics apply to what animal? One person’s “great with kids!” is another person’s “this dog bit my nephew in the face.” Community tagging/voting perhaps? Or is that making things too complicated.

  5. Microsoft used to have a CD-based product (“Microsoft Dogs” I believe) that did this very thing. Dig it out, spruce it up, web2.0ify it… and you are there!

  6. That’s awesome! I would check it out but I don’t know if my Dell can handle it..

    “…Running smoothly on a 486 with 4 MB RAM and a double-speed CD-ROM…”
