Startup #102 – More Green, Less Green

kermit

I had this idea before Christmas and I actually kinda like it a lot.  The basic premise is that there are a percentage of people out there who have gone out and ‘greenified’ their own homes.  All that good stuff like installing energy-efficient light bulbs, using biodegradable plastic garbage bags, utilizing a countertop composter, etc…  But after you do all the basic stuff to your own home, you eventually hit a wall where you’ve done everything you can to reduce your own environmental footprint.  However, if you can help other households to adopt earth-friendly products, your impact would be double, triple, quadrupled, etc…

Today’s idea is a site that allows users to subsidize the cost of products that may be friendly to the environment, but not necessarily to the wallet.  The site would have two distinct pieces of functionality.  On one side of the site, users who want to purchase green products would have the opportunity to purchase items at reduced prices.  On the other side of the site, users who want to encourage the use of green products would have the opportunity to donate money to help subsidize the cost of the items for buyers.  Users who donate to the site could use a Facebook widget to track the number of products that were purchased using their subsidies, spread the word to their friends, and see the total impact for your entire network of friends.
