Startup #106 – Politicker

Of course one of the big stories of the year is going to be the presidential elections.  Obama, Clinton, Huckabee, Paul – it seems like every minute there is a new piece of gossip, a new revelation, an underdog becoming a front runner and a new poll that won’t even be close to predicting the true outcome.

That’s the premise behind today’s idea – a browser plug-in that displays up-to-the-minute information around the latest election news.  The format could be in the form of a CNN-style running ticker across the top of your browser.  News items could be color-coded (blue for democratic, red for republican) and formatted to easily separate the huge stories from the minor ones (big bold font to indicate the big bold stories).  Of course, if you find the constantly-running ticker to be extremely annoying, users would have the option to change to a more static visual style (for example, five key stories that update every 15 minutes, or a minimalistic version where a little clickable icon appears only when a major news story hits).

  1. You really come up with this stuff yourself, Kevin? Or do you have a bunch of monkeys in your garage banging away on keyboards?

Actually, not being overly drawn into the political machinations of this country (world too, I guess) I don’t really care much for applying the mechanism to the elections. However, I very much like the idea of running the various pushed content to the browser (FF extension), web page (feature to show up on the site while the visitor is there), widget (something you could download, install on your site, configure to look and feel as you’d like and get data from my site, etc.)

Going to have to appropriate the concepts for a big project I’m on right now. Will point you its way when we’re there. Thanks.

  2. Sounds good, James, definitely looking forward to seeing what you’re up to.

I have to say, I’m not too big into politics myself – I just kinda liked the play on words. 🙂

And no, I don’t have a little monkey army in my garage, but I do use these two guys on days when I’m feeling extra lazy:
